Is it true that in order for your hair to GROW long and healthy, u have to TRIM it periodically?

My mom says u should just let ur hair grow, and just comb it and shampoo it regularly; using product moderately when needed. But others I've spoken to have told me, that like pruning roses to make 'm grow; one must cut their hair to make it grow long and healthy, otherwise the hair will split and "die" so instead of feeling all soft and silky, it'll feel rough and dull; and no luster will show. I just want to know who's right, mom or others. I just want healthy hair; long or short. I like the way if feels when it's soft and silky to the touch; and want to keep it that way, and at times, shampoo doesn't help maintain it, and combing it just pulls hair out. What should I do to maintain my shoulder-length soft silky hair so it will grow as long and healthy as I desire and still be as soft and silky and managable as it is now? Is there anyway I can maintain my hair for under $10 a month? Honest answers, thanks.

Don't tell her I said this, but your mom is wrong! It is true that to have your hair grow long and healthy, you must trim it. Just letting it grow will result in split ends that are not attractive at all. Once your hair has grown about an inch, go to the hairdresser and get no more than 1/4 of an inch cut off. You don't want all that hard earned hair to end up on the floor, now do you?

For shampoo, if your hair is thin, use a clear shampoo, like bath and body works shampoo, or pantene clarifying shampoo. If your hair is thick, you can go with white shampoos, like pantene classic clean, or intense moisture. Go with whatever you like for conditoner. After that, there's not much else you need to take care of your hair. If your hair is really thick, you might want to do a deep conditioning treatment once a week, but that's not necessary

You know, that's what I heard too.

Listen to this, I have hair down to my lower back. I've had it this long for FOREVER. I never trimmed it, and it never grew. It grew so fast at first! I asked my stylist, and she said exactly that. - You have to trim it for it to be healthy. I had bad split end and everything. And no, my hair didn't shine... it was rough, so...

YES! Trim your hair! IT WILL MAKE IT GROW AND SHINE!

i have long hair and i trim it about every 2 or 3 months, my hair is fine so when i put conditioner i rinse it at the same time. if u r dying, blow drying ,straightening it alot u need a hot oil treatment about every 4 months. never put rubber bands in ur hair always use scrunchies and ur hair should be good . i am 47 and my hair has been waist length since i was 14 and is in very good condition. good luck.

yes it's true...after a week, you should trim your hair 2 inches or so, so that you won't get split ends.. and your hair won't grow so long and so thick...

It grows alot faster and longer if you trim it. You dont want your hair to be all long but then its uneven. I got my hair trimmed every month and now my hair is almost to my butt, and im black so you kno it must work lol

ok honestly you do need to cut it or really just trim it periodically so that it doesnt get greasy no matter what you do to it. good luck with the results! byee

Of course your hair will grow if you don't trim it, BUT without trimming, you get split ends and breakage, and split ends also lead to more tangles, which lead to even more breakage. I would recommend a "micro-trim", where you trim off as little as possible (1/8 to 1/4 inch), or if you don't have that many split ends, you can just snip them off as you find them.

Another important thing: you should check and see if your hair conditioner has dimethicone in it. If it does, you should either stop using it, or start using a clarifying shampoo (like I do.) If dimethicone stays on your hair for too long (which it can, if you're not using a clarifying shampoo) it can start causing damage/breakage. Alberto V05 Kiwi Lime shampoo is a goo clarifier, and usually only a buck.
